question for icon-makers

When you make LJ icons out of images that aren't original to you and that aren't screencaps from shows or movies, where are those images coming from?

This seems like the sort of thing I ought to be able to figure out. But I felt like making myself some pretty, non-fandom-specific icons, and I just have no idea where to look for the raw materials.
