ETA, again: GOT IT! It was Acid Test, by Yahtzee. Which I managed to find because, in answering a comment, I had to describe the premise in more detail and the words "long strange trip" bobbed up to the surface of my brain. And if you google for "Xander" and "long strange trip," you will get this fic within the first few results.

O HAI, I IS SHERLOCK HOLMES. :-) *does a victory dance*

I have this memory of a Buffy episode. Xander takes some demon-made drug (I think his date slips it to him) and kind of falls out of time; we're in his POV, and he experiences the events of the next 24 hours in non-chronological order. And there is, of course, other mayhem and danger befalling the Scoobies during those 24 hours, and once Xander figures out what's happening to him he winds up saving the day because he's seen parts of the ending before he's seen the beginning. I could swear I remember visual images associated with this scenario, but I've scanned the episode listings on my BtVS dvd's and cannot find anything resembling what I've just described, so it seems increasingly likely that what I'm actually recalling is an exceptionally well written fic.

Does this sound familiar to anybody? And if you know what I'm talking about, do you know where to find it? Because I'd really like to see/read it again, but (obviously) I haven't the faintest clue where I came across it in the first place.

ETA: And no, it wasn't "The Zeppo." That's a fair guess, but the central premise of the whole thing was that Xander was experiencing time out of order, and he kept getting yanked from one moment into another with no transitions, and his chronology was all jumbled up. And this was definitely due to some demonic drug trip.

It really must have been fic, but so compellingly written that I could picture everything vividly. I just have no idea where I saw it, or who wrote it, or how to go about finding it again.

My husband spends a lot of time over at MetaFilter, and he's told me about a conversation he's seen there a few times now. It has to do with body hair, removal of. And they're not talking about men shaving their faces, or women shaving/waxing their legs. It's not even about the removal of pubic hair. Evidently the current trend involves people of both genders removing ALL their body hair, with the possible exception of what's on their heads.

It seems the folks at MeFi split along age lines: everybody over 30 finds this trend weird and freakish, and sees no reason why people would do such a thing. Everybody under 30 sees it as totally normal, as in, OF COURSE one would remove all one's body hair, and expect one's lovers to do the same, because body hair is, like, icky, and a totally smooth body is ideal.

Now, in my world, men shave their faces or don't, and women shave their armpits and legs or else they don't. There might possibly be some grooming of the pubic area, but it's not that common, and it certainly doesn't go to the extent of total hair removal (or even the pornstar landing strip). Otherwise, people have hair on their bodies, more or less of it as nature endowed them. Unless one is a professional swimmer or a starlet of dubious virtue, one does not go farther than that.

But then, I'm over 30. And maybe I'm just out of touch with Kids Today (TM). So clearly, it's time for a poll.

Um, why are so many people suddenly talking about the possibility of LJ's demise? What did I miss?

A friend of mine is starting her Ph.D. dissertation on fanfiction and derivative literature, and she's looking for examples of fic in other languages. Can anybody recommend authors who write fanfic in languages besides English? Or archives of non-English fic?

It doesn't matter what language it's in, or what fandom, or even if the fic is particularly good. She just wants some proof that fanfic exists as a phenomenon in languages other than English, and she doesn't know where to start looking.

Many thanks.

ETA: Endless thanks to everybody who helped out with this! The custom phrasebook is currently being printed, so we can't use any more new translations.

My sister is trying to assemble a gift for a dear friend of hers, who is about to quit her job and travel the world for a year or so. This woman is a veteran hiker, a musician, and a chocoholic; my sister wants to give her, as a farewell gift, a phrase book that will help her throughout the world, wherever she may be, with the things that professional guidebooks don’t cover. Specifically, she wants to translate one or more of the following sentences into as many languages as possible:

Do you sell chocolate in this store? (or any close equivalent, such as “where can I buy chocolate?” or “How much does the chocolate cost?”)

Where can I buy a guitar string? (or, “Are you familiar with the work of Pete Seeger?”)

I have hiked too much and I would like to ice my knee.

If you can comment with ANY of the above in another language (phonetically, please, if it’s not in the Roman alphabet), we'd be most grateful. The goal here is to gather as many other languages as possible: French/Spanish/German/Italian etc, but also as many Asian, African, and other languages as we can get. The more far-flung, the better! Latvian, Korean, Vietnamese, Caribbean patois, Bengali, Greek, Icelandic, Thai, Yiddish – whatever you’ve got. Dead languages would be great, too, as would Vulcan, Elvish, Esperanto, etc.

I know some of you have many different languages under your belt: help a sister out? Also, if anyone feels like boosting this signal, I'd be thrilled to get help from folks I don't know (including the many geniuses who put together the OTW's brilliant multilingual FAQ -- some of whom I know, but most of whom I don't...)

Thank you kindly.
