Thing!

Back from a much-needed vacation. I've barely glanced at LJ for the past week, so if anything noteworthy was posted, please let me know.

Meanwhile, I'm pleased to return with a Thing for this week: a SV ficlet. Once again dipping into the 69 Love Songs project.

Title: Love Song #29: Grand Canyon
Author: [livejournal.com profile] slinkling
Fandom: Smallville
Rating: PG
Length: 600 words
Notes: Unbeta'd, and it probably shows. Oh well. The Magnetic Fields song which inspired this ficlet can be heard here, at the top of the second page. It's one of my favorite sad songs; go listen. Music uploaded by the very generous [livejournal.com profile] disprove.

Lex isn’t the one who’s changed. )

Holy wow, I've completed another Thing A Week. I believe I have now exceeded my creative output for all of 2008. (Not counting my procreative output, which is different.) And this one revives my long-defunct 69 Love Songs project. Anybody remember that? No, I didn't think so.

Title: Love Song #19: A Pretty Girl Is Like...
Author: [livejournal.com profile] slinkling
Fandom: Smallville
Rating: PG-13
Length: 700 words
Notes: For [livejournal.com profile] ladydey, who prompted me with "Smallville - Lex/Clark, runaway bride." The title corresponds to a Magnetic Fields song, which you can listen to over here, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] disprove, who uploaded them for me eons ago. All italicized lines are by Magnetic Fields.

This way to the fic. )

slinkling: (art nouveau chick)
1) [livejournal.com profile] kassrachel pointed out this article about a new Joss Whedon TV series starring Eliza Dushku. That’s just nifty.

2) I’ve just listened to a cover of “Don’t Fear The Reaper” by Nick Cave and Enya. It was wrong in many, many ways. But still, the fact that Nick Cave and Enya entered a recording studio together -- and the world didn’t end, despite the coming together of musical matter and anti-matter -- is really kind of cool. Even if the results of their collaboration are scarier than this reaper I’m not supposed to fear.

3) So I go offline for two weeks, and J.K. Rowling outs Dumbledore. (Coincidence? Yeah, probably.) There’s an interesting essay in the NYTimes about Dumbledore’s sexuality and whether or not it matters (you’ll have to register with the Times to read it, but it’s free). I’m particularly intrigued by this paragraph:

Her heroes are the hybrids, the misfits, those of mixed blood, all bearing scars of loss and love: the half-giant Hagrid, the mudblood Hermione (whose parents were not wizards), the poverty-stricken Ron, the orphaned Harry. Perhaps speaking of Dumbledore as gay was just a matter of creating another diverse rebel against orthodoxy.

Go down the ranks of the Order of the Phoenix and you get yet more examples: the werewolf Lupin, the uncertainly gendered Tonks, the estranged-from-his-evil-family-and-wrongly-imprisoned-for-twelve-years Sirius, etc. So far, so good. But it seems to me – and I preface this by saying that I’ve never been into Potterverse slash, so I don’t have a vested interest in proving this one way or the other – but anyway, it seems to me like this is all an eloquent argument in favor of the gayness of Draco. Cut for VERY vague DH spoilers. )

4) I watched SV 7.04 and 7.05 -- "Cure" and "Action" -- yesterday. Holy crap, Smallville! Two really good episodes in a row! With clever plots and juicy Clex scenes and seriously fascinating canonical meta! Dare I hope that this is a trend? Some spoilery comments follow. )

5) “Action” has inspired a wee little addition to my 69 Love Songs project. It’s a bit dopey, I admit. But it had to be done. (I am, as always, Lex’s bitch.)

Love Song #34: My Only Friend  )

Yesterday I passed several hours of train-riding by writing vignettes for [livejournal.com profile] bop_radar's Character Study Challenge. Which, btw, is still going on and everybody should write stuff for it! If you'd like to find my pieces (thus far -- who knows, maybe there will be more) over there, they're on the second page of comments. But I figured I'd also make life simpler by posting them over here.

The prompts I chose were:

Smallville, Lois, Lois and her thoughts on powerful men )

Smallville, Lex, the sky )

Firefly, Simon Tam, civilization )

Harry Potter, Lily, after finding out Severus has joined the death eaters )

WIP meme

Gacked from [livejournal.com profile] astolat: When you see this, post a little weensy excerpt from as many random works-in-progress as you can find lying around. Who knows? Maybe inspiration will burst forth and do something, um, inspiration-y.

These are all SV, shockingly enough. Some of them might actually get finished someday.

partial Love Songs and incomplete AUs )

In the last week or so, I've watched all of season 1 of Due South. I miss Ray K. I miss Fraser Sr., and cherished his rare appearances. 4 or 5 episodes made me insanely happy, and the rest were, well, okay. But the ones that made me insanely happy were worth it, and soon I'll begin season 2. Meanwhile I've been having fun with the It's a Small Casting World game, having spotted the actress who played Rebecca on Sports Night, the actor who was Buffy's rebound boyfriend in season 3 of BtVS, a young Mark Ruffalo (who looked surprisingly like a young Marlon Brando), and a VERY young Ryan Phillippe.

But that's not actually what I'm posting about, because having FINALLY finished the Character Meme with a long-overdue three things about Clark for [livejournal.com profile] isilweth, I'm now thinking all kinds of SV thoughts again, and am feeling like a big slacker for not having done any more of my Love Songs for such a long time. So here's a drabble: 100 words, harking back to season one.

Love Song #8: The Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side )

Music-wise, this is among my favorite of all the songs on the album, and you can hear it over here -- Disk 1, track 8 -- thanks to [livejournal.com profile] disprove. As always, the music belongs to Magnetic Fields and the characters belong to mighty and powerful corporations that make money off them, unlike me.
slinkling: (Clark-journey)
I've seen people do such fantastic things with this meme lately. It looks like way too much fun; I just have to play too.

Name a character (from a show I'm familiar with) and I'll give you three (or more) facts about them from my personal canon/fanon.

Note: I'm actually familiar with more shows than I've fangirled about in here. And I'm kind of curious to see what happens if I stretch my fandom wings a bit. So for purposes of this meme, possibilities include SV, BtVS, Sports Night, Firefly, MASH, The West Wing (first two season only), and Slings & Arrows (ditto).

Here it is, folks: the 14th and final piece of the February Project. And this one's a little longer than the others, and a little different. Hope you like.

Happy valentine's day, all.

For We Are the King of the Boudoir. )
slinkling: (69 love songs)
I have to admit, when I began this I really wasn't sure if I'd be able to come up with little bits o' porn (pornlets?) for 14 days in a row. But I'm very nearly at the end! Woo!

Anyway, here, have some more of For We Are the King of the Boudoir. )
slinkling: (69 love songs)
As promised, our fourth and final theme for the February Project is a happy one, not to mention one of my all-time favorite silly songs. Which reminds me, it's been a while since I linked to the songs themselves. Click over to the third page, where the theme of the last few days, Love In the Shadows, is disk 3, track 7. Beginning today, the theme is disk 3, track 20: For We Are the King of the Boudoir. (Thank, as usual, to the Magnetic Fields for the inspiration, and to [livejournal.com profile] disprove for uploading the music.)

One more day of angst, and then, I promise, something happier. Today's piece could be read as a companion to yesterday's, if you choose. Or maybe they take place in different universes. I can't decide.

Day 10

slinkling: (69 love songs)
And another day gets away from me. Sheesh, it's almost like I have a life or something.

But clearly, SV porn is more important. Thus we have still more of Love In the Shadows. )
slinkling: (69 love songs)
Today has gotten away from me; I'd meant to post this earlier. Also to reply to comments, which I'm running behind on. Whoops.

Anyway, here's another installment of Love In the Shadows. )
slinkling: (69 love songs)
Because I do like a healthy mixture of angst in my porn, the theme for the next few days will be Love In The Shadows. )
slinkling: (69 love songs)
One last day of this theme; tomorrow we'll go to a darker place.

Today, however, we're still in The Night You Can't Remember.

Please note, today's vignette contains spoilers for "Shattered" and "Asylum" (SV 3.8 & 3.9). Given the theme, you knew I had to go there, right?

The Night You Can't Remember )
slinkling: (69 love songs)
Yet another offering of The Night You Can't Remember -- and this one isn't even episode-related! (Though I never would have chosen this theme if SV didn't give us so very many episodes that suit it.)

Clexy smut behind the cut-tag. )
slinkling: (69 love songs)
I finally saw "Labyrinth" and "Crimson" yesterday. I thought "Crimson" was terrific and I'm cutting for spoilers. )

"Labryinth" was a big disappointment; I could point to specific reasons why, but mostly it just came down to bad, bad writing. It annoyed me as I watched it, but it did at least inspire today's vignette, which has me once again playing with the theme, The Night You Can't Remember.

Note: this is an AU scene for "Labyrinth" (SV 6.12) and probably won't make much sense if you haven't seen the episode. If it had gone like this, I'd have liked it a lot more. )

New theme!

The February porn project continues, with a new theme.

It's occurred to me that I've been remiss in not linking to the Magnetic Fields songs which are lending their titles to these vignettes. Courtesy of the mighty [livejournal.com profile] disprove, you can hear the referenced songs over here. The theme of the last few pieces was "Let's Pretend We're Bunny Rabbits," which is disk 1, track 9. Starting today, our theme is "The Night You Can't Remember," which you'll find on the third page; it's disk 3, track 19.

Please note, today's installment contains spoilers for "Zod" (SV season 6 episode 1).

'Tis I, the friendly porn fairy, here to bring you your daily moment of clex. But first, if I can just vent for a second -- I was downloading the newest episode of SV and had gotten 325 out of 350 MB and then it crashed and went kablooie. And due to satellite pissiness, I can't try again until tomorrow. And the exact same thing happened last week. AAAAAARRRGGGGHH.

Ahem. Just had to get that out of my system.

Anyway, here's one last installment of Let's Pretend We're Bunny Rabbits; tomorrow I'll start on a new theme. Click me, baby. )

At the request of [livejournal.com profile] allzugern, I'm now tagging these posts, so if you'd like an easy way to revisit my 14 days of porn, follow the link for february smut.
slinkling: (69 love songs)
Today's moment of porn once again falls under the heading, Let's Pretend We're Bunny Rabbits  )

I now return you to your regularly scheduled Friday.
