slinkling: (art nouveau chick)
There’s really nothing like trying on pants to make me feel fat and mis-shapen. As far as I can tell, there are exactly two clothing retailers in the United States who make pants to fit short girls with small waists, wide hips, and buttocks. (Who ARE all these women without buttocks that every other clothing designer in the world caters to?) Of course, as I live in the boonies, these two stores are both a 90-minute drive away from me. Fortunately, they’re only 10 minutes from each other, and today I ventured out.

Do you know how rare it is for me to have a good shopping experience? When I need to buy pants? (That’d be trousers, for my English friends. Confusing the two terms caused much hilarity during the year of university I spent in Britain.) Plus, driving can be tough on my knees, so I was dreading today’s expedition. 3 hours of driving in order to try on clothes! Also known as the fifth circle of hell.

And I’ve actually had a terrific day. I can’t believe it. Visited my two favorite stores, and renewed my belief that there’s really no point in ever shopping anywhere else. Tried on many items that actually looked GOOD on me. I had CHOICES. And things were on sale! I spent $125 and came away with two pairs of pants (that fit! And aren’t too long! And are flattering! Bliss!), two really pretty tops, and a new belt. As if that weren’t enough, it’s a stunningly gorgeous day – we’re in peak leaf season around here – so even the drives were fantastic. I navigated new routes on back roads that took me through winding hills and valleys, and past farms and pretty houses and just one breath-taking vista after another. Everything’s yellow and red and orange and green, and the sky’s a perfect pale blue, and I was listening to happy music in my car and feeling much better about life than I’d expected to.

And came home to find that the newest episode of SV has successfully downloaded. I’ve got just enough time to watch it before getting dressed to go out for a nice dinner with friends, to celebrate a recent wedding. (The bride and groom had a stealth-wedding, with only their immediate families attending.) It’s a good Saturday.
