Last night I watched Twilight.

Some of you were telling me at MJ that I needed to see this flick, preferably with much wine. [livejournal.com profile] kristiinthedark, [livejournal.com profile] drlense, was that you guys? Telling me it was terrible but awesome at the same time, and surprisingly hilarious?

Um, yeah. Whoever told me that was dead on. (About the wine, too. Yes indeedy.) My husband watched it with me, and at several points we were just hooting with laughter. At other times we were weirdly mesmerized. It was not a *good* film, not by any stretch of the imagination, but an awful lot of technical skill went into making this incredibly cheesy movie. And an *awful* lot of marketing expertise. Because, wow, it was like watching a $40-million id-stroker for 12-year-old girls.

And clearly, the 12-year-old girl I once was is still there inside me, and gosh but her id was stroked by this. I even want to read the books now. (Which, yes, I am ashamed to admit. Ashamed enough that I probably won't shell out money to buy new copies of the books, even though I want them NOW; instead I'll wait until I find them in a used-book bin somewhere or other. With so many copies in circulation, surely some will turn up at library sales and the like.)

I also (while ducking my head in shame) want fic. Is there crossover fic with the Buffyverse? C'mon, there HAS to be. (And presumably it has a way of accounting for the distinction between vampires who burst into flame in sunlight, vs. those who merely sparkle. SPARKLY VAMPIRES, people. I GOT DRUNK AND FELL FOR AN ABSTINENCE FABLE ABOUT SPARKLY VAMPIRES. HELP ME.)

Actually, from a more intellectual viewpoint (because I have to justify my interest in this film somehow), the abstinence-fable-angle is really interesting. He WANTS to ravish her, but he won't because he loves her too much. Though he's in constant danger of losing control of himself, he will safeguard her purity, no matter how it pains him. Or her. Which, again, way to play up to pubescent girls' interest in and fear of sex. And make that fear distressingly hot.

It really makes me wonder, though -- okay, say Edward and Bella become a longterm couple. And he doesn't eat her. Sure, she might be scared of sex now, as a shy 16-year-old, but what about a few years down the road? Won't she seriously WANT sex as she gets older, as the fear-of-Edward-losing-control loses its novelty? And doesn't he lust for things besides just blood? Even granted that he can't have sex with her because then he might kill her -- eventually they'd have to come up with workarounds, right? I'm picturing serious kinks developing for these two. Voyeurism and exhibitionism, hardcore bondage (to restrain him sufficiently that he can lose control and still pose no threat), probably a fair amount of BDSM play. And okay, yes, I'm putting too much thought into this, but I can't be the only person to go there with this couple, right?

Right?
