chimosa: Rules: Write a journal entry for this meme with six random facts about yourself. Then pick six of your friends list and tag them – no tag-backs! These rules should be included in your entry.
1. In sixth grade, I watched Gone with the Wind on TV and became totally obsessed with it. I read the book multiple times, watched making-of documentaries, steeped myself in GWTW trivia, etc. In retrospect, it was kinda my first fandom. I still have a thing for the movie (and I still think the book is terrific, though the sequel blew), and have received many GWTW-related gifts over the years, from a ceramic music box that plays the theme song, to movie posters in multiple languages, to (most recently) the geektastic special-issue DVD.
2. Actually, this geeky obsessing over random things was a trend for me, though usually it was on some aspect of history. Other obsessions were with the Salem witch trials, and Queen Elizabeth I (and the Tudors in general). All this was before I was 12. I'd just get hooked by some subject and read book after book about it. My local librarian must have thought I was a nut.
3. I was raised on golden-age-Hollywood and Broadway musicals. Mostly my dad's influence. The first movie I ever saw in a theater was a re-release of The Wizard of Oz (which, incidentally, was made the same year and by the same director as GWTW -- see my earlier point about film trivia). We lived in the suburbs of NYC, so birthdays and special occasions were always celebrated by going out to a Broadway show. I've fallen away from musicals since then, but saw "Hairspray" on Broadway a couple years ago and had tears streaming down my face throughout the overture, just because it brought back all the happy feelings I'd always associated with seeing these shows.
4. Related to #3 -- I'm a total emotional sap. This would be my mom's influence. I cry at the drop of a hat. Say something really sweet to me and I'm liable to get teary. Start humming "You Are My Sunshine" and I'll get a little choked up. This gets counterbalanced by the fact that I have an extremely dry, sarcastic sense of humor.
5. I'm weirdly addicted to jigsaw puzzles -- to the extent that I have trouble walking away from one before it's finished. I only let myself do a puzzle once or twice a year, because I will literally lose whole days with it. Yet in spite of how compulsive I get with them, they're one of the most relaxing things in the world for me. I lose all sense of time passing, and my brain -- which usually chatters nonstop with ideas and stories and things I ought to take care of and random worries -- falls completely silent while I contentedly fit one piece into another.
6. Until I was in my mid-20s, I could not stomach the taste of fish, or seafood of any kind. I learned to like sushi before I learned to like cooked fish. I still find shellfish scary (something about the texture is just alarming), but caviar with creme fresh is now one of my favorite special-occasion treats.
I suspect that most everyone's been tagged for this already, but at the risk of double-dipping, I tag:
supacat,
garryowen,
frelling_tralk,
tasabian,
romanyg, and
betrue.
