slinkling

I watched the musical version of Hairspray last night. I enjoyed it, though not quite as much as the original. Also not quite as much as the Broadway show, but it's hard to beat the feeling of live theater. Still love the music. And much of the cast was terrific; Nikki Blonsky is easily the cutest thing ever, Michelle Pfeiffer was splendiferous, Queen Latifah rocked (though that's hardly surprising), Christopher Walken was awesome. Zac Efron does nothing for me, but I'd probably think he was dreamy if I were 11. And John Travolta seems to have missed the memo about how Edna is a comic role; I really missed Divine. Or Harvey Fierstein, who had the role on Broadway. Still, it was a fun evening.

Just as I was getting towards the climax, though, our power went out. We'd been having a blizzard/ice storm all day, getting steadily worse and windier, and we lost power around 9:30. It stayed out for almost 2 hours. Once I'd gotten a bunch of candles lit, it was actually kind of cool: very quiet except for the storm, and the house had a dim, warm glow to it. It was almost like being in another century. (Well, except for the part where I located the candles and matches by using my laptop screen to light my way. And for the part where, once we'd gotten the candles going and a fire in the fireplace, I then sat down to play a game on my laptop, because there wasn't really enough light to read by and it's wasn't like I could return to the tv at that point. But other than that, it was totally nineteenth century.)
