slinkling: (Slinkling2 (afternoon dress))
I awoke this morning to discover that I'd received another little gift from Yuletide: Something Unalterably Deranged, a fic based on Tom Stoppard's "Arcadia," written by Elizabeth as a New Year's Resolution challenge.

It's set after the events of the play, in the hermitage -- and, as you might guess if you know the original, the fic is haunted and sad and lovely. I adore Stoppard's work because it's always about umpteen different things at once ("Arcadia" could fairly be said to concern love, sex, poetry, mathematics, landscape gardening, the Romantic era, literary scholarship, and the impossibility of truly grasping history -- and that's the short list), and this fic captures that spirit beautifully. Go, read.

Meanwhile... I've been more than usually absent, and I apologize for that. I'm feeling very disconnected from fandom lately, like I just don't have the energy for stories at the moment. And that's kind of tragic. (Not to imply that my life is tragic these days, just... low on fiction.) I haven't seen the last couple episodes of SV yet. Haven't had much interest in fic. I don't even know if I have a primary fandom at present, and I further don't know if that bothers me. Presumably sooner or later I'll snap out of it and drift back to this stuff. It's a little weird that, in this state of mind, I'll be attending my first con in a few weeks, but maybe I'll feel different by then. Or maybe Escapade will touch off a fandom renaissance of some sort. In any case, sorry I've not been around. I think of all you guys fondly, even when I go way too long without checking LJ.
