slinkling: (Clark-journey)
Home again. The journey back was made somewhat more exciting by the fact that I flew with Fonzie! Seriously, Henry Winkler was in the first class cabin on my flight out of LA. He's looking grey-haired and dapper these days, but still recognizable as The Fonz. The 50ish woman sitting next to me back in coach was adorably fangirly; as soon as she sat down, she had to pull out her cellphone to tell a friend about it, exclaiming "Guess who's on my plane!" and then singing the whole theme song: "Sunday, Monday, happy days..."

But anyway. Escapade was... interesting. Generally good, and I'm really glad I went, though I'm not certain if I'd go again. In part because a large number of people there seem to be Old Guard Fen who aren't terribly interested in chatting with newbies. Though maybe my own shyness is to blame; I have trouble initiating conversations with people who show no interest in conversing with me. Also, due to jetlag and whatnot, I was so ludicrously tired that I wound up missing large chunks of the con; there were several panels that looked fascinating, which I skipped in favor of napping. I suspect this was the right call for me, but I also suspect I missed out on some really good conversations.

Still, I did get to take part in some really good conversations, and it was totally worth the trip. Rooming with [livejournal.com profile] norwich36 was awesome, and I'm SO glad that I got to spend time with her. Getting to meet fellow SV fangirl [livejournal.com profile] clari_clyde was also lovely; plus [livejournal.com profile] kassrachel introduced me to a host of very cool people, including [livejournal.com profile] sherrold and [livejournal.com profile] wickedwords and [livejournal.com profile] arallara and [livejournal.com profile] smallbeer and [livejournal.com profile] nyssa23 and others whose names I'm embarrassed to admit I either failed to catch or I've already forgotten. And I learned some fascinating stuff about the history of fandom, and watched 3 quite good episodes of SPN (and found Nora's del.icio.us recs, which will keep me busy for a while), and partook of much squee about SGA (several people, when I mentioned that Kass is pimping me into SGA, said "Oh, YOU'RE the one doing the Fandom Exchange Program! We've heard of you!"), and equal amounts squee and griping about SV. And the panel Kass and I co-led went really well; I'll be posting about that anon.

So all in all, a good trip, even if I didn't attend as much con as I probably should have. Then again, I did get to walk along a beach -- without a coat, even! in March! -- and hang out with people I like a lot, so I have no cause for complaint.

A few people at the Costs of Heroism panel asked me to post my notes from that conversation. I should specify that I wasn't taking notes during the panel, but I'm happy to share the questions I used to get the conversation going:Read more... )

Also, during this and other conversations, I mentioned a handful of fics and meta-essays which I promised to provide links for. So:recs follow )
